Bedtime stories
When should you stop reading bedtime stories?
There is no age you must stop reading bedtime stories — many families continue well into ages 10–12 and beyond. Keep going as long as your child enjoys it; shared reading benefits vocabulary and bonding even after kids can read on their own.
Independent reading and bedtime stories serve different purposes, so one doesn't have to end the other. Reading aloud exposes children to books above their own reading level, models expression, and — most importantly — protects a daily moment of connection. Many children who read fluently still love being read to at bedtime.
Let your child lead the transition. Some shift from you reading to reading together, then to reading on their own, gradually and at their own pace. Even older children enjoy an occasional read-aloud or a personalized story. The right time to stop is simply when your child no longer wants it — not a fixed age.
